Taifa Leo has reported that there is confusion within ODM party over who to trust between Former prime minister Raila Odinga and Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, who is also ODM secretary general.
The publication says that the continued criticism by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna of the partnership between party leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto has stirred debate about the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general election.
The report has noted that whether he Nairobi Senator is a rebel indenting to disrupt ODM from within, or he may be acting as Raila’s proxy, laying the groundwork for withdrawing from the coalition between ODM and Ruto’s UDA.
While Raila insists the partnership with President Ruto will last until 2027, Sifuna has strongly opposed this stance, describing it as “disastrous.”
“Our partnership with the Kenya Kwanza government is costing us dearly. It is hurting us as a party because the President’s side has failed to honor the terms of our cooperation agreement. That’s why I say the deal is dead,” said Sifuna.
This has left both ODM supporters and opponents puzzled over whom to believe—Raila or Sifuna.
Senator Sifuna has openly criticized the Government of National Unity, which includes five ODM members serving as Cabinet Secretaries, citing police brutality, extrajudicial killings, and other state abuses.
The Secretary-General maintains that ODM is not part of the government and will not support President Ruto in the 2027 election.
“I want Ruto to know that his removal from office is a national agenda. It is the number one priority because his administration violates the values outlined in the Constitution. From my standpoint, I support Ruto’s removal. If an impeachment motion comes to the Senate, I will support it without hesitation,” he added.
But Raila said the decision by ODM to partner with President Ruto’s government was meant to preserve national stability.
“We’ve said that we are part of the Unity Government until 2027. We haven’t said we’ll work with UDA beyond 2027. Those are matters to be discussed at the right time, and the decision will be made by ODM members—not Raila Odinga as an individual,” Raila said.
But Sifuna insists that if ODM continues its partnership with the current administration until 2027, the party won’t have time to properly prepare for the general election.
